Sweeden is the king of producing indie bands… maybe I’m just in love with Labrador Records, who I seem to plug way too much. Anyhoooo, the latest band on my Artist Watch picked their name from an old gas station turned radio repair shop called Radioavdelningen. And if you cant pronounce that, you’re an idiot. I hate the term shoegaze because i thought it doesnt mean anything. However, I am once again corrected by my brother: shoegaze acutally has a meaning beyond just staring at your feet. the genre, which is one of my favorites, is known for its heavy use of guitar delay effects. during live shoes, shoegaze bands would be constantly pushing pedals at their feet to controrl the effects of the guitars..therefore they were always looking down at their feet…hence shoegaze…There you go. The first song here, “I don’t need love, Ive got my band,” is the most upbeat of the three. It’s pretty original sounding (not Beirut original, but still original). The next, “Pulling Our Weight,” was featured in Sophia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette, which I guess was supposed to be the next hip/yuppie movie with a bangin soundtrack. The soundtrack was good, some good covers, but sources tell me (my mother) that the film wasnt worth it. The last song I’m not gonna talk about cause ive typed way too much, but its on the newest cd, Pet Grief.
